  CSOT MT4601B02 – The First 46-inch TFT-LCD Module of China

  Abstract:

  CSOT (China Star Optoelectronics Technology) MT4601B02 is the first 46-inch liquid crystal display TV module designed and produced in Mainland China. At present, it is also the largest module fabricated by G8.5 production line in China. The features of the module include high contrast ratio, high transmittance, fast response time and low color shift design which improves the large viewing angle performance. Besides, it’s also a slim-bezel module with 12mm bezel in source side and 9.9mm in the other side. In addition, this module has shutter glasses 3D function.

  1. Introduction

  COST(China Star Optoelectronics Technology) located in Shenzhen, which is a manufacturer of LCD TV panels and founded in the end of 2009. CSOT has a G8.5 production line dedicated to fabricating LCD panels from 26 inches to 55 inches. On August 8th, 2011, CSOT launched 32” TV panels, the first product of G8.5 line.

  CSOT MT4601B02 is the first 46-inch TFT-LCD module fabricated in China. The features of this module include slim border design, excellent large viewing angle performance and high transmittance.

  2. Slim Border Design

  In recent years, thin, light and slim TV module is the trend of TFT-LCD manufacturing technology. Slim border design makes TV more fashion and stylish. [1-3]

  To achieve slim border design, the array design and cell process are very critical, especially for large-size panels, such as shrinking fanout pitch, accurate PI and sealant dispersion. However, these designs may cause serious RC loading and other mura. The low sheet resistance metal films are used to reduce signal distortion. Furthermore, asymmetrical fanout design is applied in the peripheral design to reduce the length and cost of X-board. The border size of CSOT MT4601B02 has been reduced to 12.9mm in source side and 9.9mm in the other side. Related dimensions are shown in Fig.1.

  3. Large Viewing Angle Performance

  When a TFT-LCD is observed from a large viewing angle, the colors, especially the skin colors will become white. This phenomenon is called color shift or color washout [4]. The main reason is that the Gamma curve (transmittance-gray curve) is distorted while looking at the TFT-LCD panel obliquely. Color shift is more serious in large-size panels.

  In order to solve this problem, two-area design in each sub-pixel is used in MT4601B02 to prevent gamma curve from being distorted. It improves the large viewing angle performance. Fig.2 shows MT4601B02 being observed from normal viewing angle and obliquely.

  4. HVA Technology

  CSOT has developed its own vertical alignment technology named HVA. The advantages of HVA technology are fast response, high contrast ratio and high transmittance.

  Response time has been measured. Fig. 3 shows the measured result. The Ton and Toff are about 7ms and 6ms respectively. The average gray to gray response is 6.92ms. Besides, the measured contrast ratio is high up to 4000. This is competitive to current products in the market.

  Transmittance is the most important performance of a TFT-LCD device. High transmittance will lead to low power consumption and reduce the cost of backlight unit. Improving transmittance was our emphasis during the design phase. Until now, the transmittance of MT4601B02 is higher than 6.0%, and reaches the leading level in the world.

  5. 3D Display

  Shutter glasses 3D display function can be activated in 120Hz mode. Shutter glasses can realize 3D display without any loss of resolution (FHD, 1920*RGB*1080), and it also reduces the cost, because there’s no need for pattern retard film [5]. Besides, the large viewing angle performance of 3D function is improved (178°, H / 178°, V). Fig.4 shows MT4601B02 module with 3D function activated.

  Conclusion

  CSOT MT4601B02 is the largest commercial TFT-LCD panel fabricated in mainland China now. Slim border design and 3D are the main features of the TV module product. Large viewing angle performance is improved by low color shift design. Fast response, high contrast ratio and high transmittance are achieved by the application of HVA technology. With shutter glasses technology, 3D display function can be realized with FHD resolution.

  华星光电的MT4601B02模组是中国大陆第一款自主设计,生产的46“液晶显示模组,另外它也是目前为止中国8.5代线生产的最大的尺寸的模组。这款模组的主要特点包括高对比度,高穿透率,快速响应时间和改善大视角特性的低色偏设计。这是一款窄边框设计的机种,在source侧的边框宽度为12mm,另外3侧为9.9mm。另外,这款模组还可以利用快门式眼镜来实现3D显示的功能。
