USA Freedom
The bill designed to limit theOrwellian powers of the National Security Agency passed the House ofRepresentatives on Thursday, and it’s hard to find anyone who is happy about itbesides the NSA itself, along with the present administration that oversees oursurveillance state.
Ostensibly, HR3361 — known as the USAFreedom Act, another example of our fraying democracy being cloaked in amarketing catchphrase — was supposed to put an end to the NSA’s massive datacollection, and put limits on the secret court that grants warrants to searchthe data.
Instead, the House took a robust billand neutered it, making the language ambiguous and exploitable. In the end, 76 lawmakersfrom both parties voted against a bill they once supported, because everyexpert says it does nothing to curtail mass surveillance and bulk collection.
You’ve heard the NSA’s case: Thisglobal dragnet is justified by the dangers that lurk within, and in order tofind the needle, you need to comb through the entire haystack.
But every new poll reflects doubt.Every rubber stamp in Congress is another hit on civil liberties, as Americansbegin to
Most of all, how did the FISA court —once considered a disgrace by the American left – become safeguard of ourrights?
Rep. Rush Holt (D-12th Dist.) said itbest: "How could anyone here vote for legislation that doesn’t uphold theconstitutional standard of probable cause?"
Short answer: His colleagues believethe NSA can tear the Constitution into confetti-sized pieces, alienate ourallies and sniff through our private records like a rabid ferret. Why end allthat? Hopefully, the Senate will have a different answer.
