Qualcomm is developing a"portfolio" of chips for the Internet of Things, said the company'snew chief executive at a keynote here. At the same event the head of IBM'sWatson group talked about market and technology directions the group is pursing.

As "an extension of our business... weare building a portfolio of products and technologies" for the IoT, saidSteve Mollenkopf, Qualcomm's CEO, although he chafed at the term IoT. "Itmeans different things to different people and it means nothing to a lot ofpeople," he said in at the annual TIE Con event here.

He defined IoT as the new "edge of thenetwork...[that has] a lot of surface area [and]... is a very wide open space[that] looks different than the phone space."

More specifically, it's still early daysfor wearables, he added, noting non-technical problems in security/privacy andfashion marketing.

"People come out with devices thatdon’t work, but that means innovation is happening -- someone will work itout," he said. "You don’t want to bat 1,000 because that means youare not setting your ambitions high enough," he added.

For its part, Qualcomm is "at a pointwhere we are trying to figure out what's next for the company... we're in aringside seat to a lot of changes in the industry," he said.Interestingly, he noted the company is essentially in two businesses, makingchips and intellectual property and the licensing group is "where most ofprofits come from."

In a separate talk here, the head of IBM'sWatson group discussed the road ahead for the company's software, suggestingthe intellectual property in big data will be the center of profit for manycompanies.

"We are building into Watson a newcapability to perform a dynamic psycho-linguistic profile of the user -- itunderstands you," said Mike Rhodin, who leads IBM's Watson group. "Itcan figure out why you may be asking a question so it can give you a betteranswer."

Also in the works are capabilities forWatson to engage in a dialog beyond its question and answer format and a reasoningfacility to respond to a complex problem statement with a more detailedapproach to solving it.

Rhodin described Watson as an approach tousing probability theory and machine learning on natural language input, radically different to other big data algorithms such as Hadoop or Google's MapReduce. The company is reaching out to partners large and small to bring it toa wide variety of markets.

"I tell my biz dev team to look forindustries with massive unstructured data sets being produced at a rapid pacethat need to be handled by experts such as law, accounting, health care andregulations -- they are great places to look at turning business models upsidedown," he said.

In separate steps over the past year, IBMhas opened Watson to developers in startups, corporate IT departments and mostrecently seven universities including Berkeley and Carnegie Mellon. "Someof the great artificial intelligence universities will teach how to build appson Watson," he said.

So far the initiative is more a center ofinvestment than revenue. IBM announced last year it will pump a billion dollarsinto Watson including a $100 million venture fund. Separately, the former headof the Watson group, Manoj Saxena, started another $150 million big data fundfocused on Watson

"The possibility of Bayesian answersfrom computers will re-configure the software stack," said Saxena incomments on stage here.
