MediaTek seems to be turning a lot of heads lately, with plenty of rumors suggesting that the chip maker is soon going to be a force to be reckoned with, not only in Asian markets, but in the western hemisphere as well.

Some of you might recall the recent rumors suggesting that Google is working on a budget friendlier Nexus smartphone, boasting mid-range specifications and a very low price tag. The said device has been rumored to pack a MediaTek 64-bit processor, and evidently, this would tremendously boost MTK’s influence in the western markets.

However, Google is not the only big-time US-based company that might adopt MediaTek’s chipsets, and previous rumors have also suggested that Amazon will be equipping its next entry-level Kindle Fire tablets with the MT8135 quad-core processor. Now, fresh rumors coming from Taiwan Economic Daily further confirm this theory. Check back after the break for the full story.

MediaTek Chipsets to power Amazon’s 2014 Kindle Fire Slates

Initially, MediaTek has dismissed the idea that it will collaborate with Amazon in 2014, but the chip maker did say that it will try and close deals with any potential clients. Earlier today, reports coming from the online publication known as Taiwan Economic Daily have suggested that MediaTek’s chipsets will indeed power Amazon’s 2014 Kindle Fire tablets. It is not clear if the entire 2014 line-up will come with MTK chipsets or if only the entry Kindle Fire model(s).

With Amazon being one of the largest tablet vendors in the world, and with shipments of roughly 1.8 to 2 million tablets each quarter, a collaboration between the said online retailer and MediaTek would definitely increase the chip maker’s influence in the mobile market, especially in the States.

Any thoughts regarding these latest reports? Do you think MediaTek has what it takes to compete with the likes of Qualcomm and NVIDIA? Either way, we’ll keep you up to date as soon as the story develops, so stay tuned.
