Some second-tier and small China-based handset vendors feel that Google has unreasonably high charges for some applications under the Android platform, and therefore plan to request the China government launch an anti-trust probe into Google's unfair competition, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
Based on similar charges, the China government has initiated investigations to check whether Qualcomm and InterDigital Communications (IDC) have been conducting unfair competition for sales of their handset chips or wireless technologies, respectively, in China.
While the China government has yet to complete its probes into the two companies, Qualcomm and IDC reportedly have been making efforts to improve relations with China, the sources noted.
The probes into Qualcomm and IDC might have come as China is gearing up efforts to shore up its semiconductor and IC design industries as well as to protect the interests of domestic suppliers as it is ready to inaugurate 4G services, the sources commented.
However, chances are lower for Google being included in an anti-trust probe at this time, said the sources, but warned that Google may face continual challenges from supply chains in China.
